How to Grow Closer to God: 7 Simple Ways to Strengthen Your Faith

Have you ever felt like you wanted to grow closer to God, but you weren't quite sure where to start?

Maybe life has gotten busy. Maybe your prayer time isn't as consistent as you'd like it to be. Or maybe you're in a season where you just feel a little distant from Him.

I've been there, too. ❤️

Sometimes we make growing closer to God seem so complicated. We think we need to have the perfect morning routine, read several chapters of the Bible every day, or spend hours in prayer.

But here's something I've learned.

Growing closer to God isn't about doing everything perfectly. It's about making room for Him in our everyday lives.

James 4:8 reminds us:

"Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you."

I love that promise!

So today, I want to share seven simple ways we can strengthen our faith and grow closer to God, one day at a time.

Open Bible with a cup of coffee and soft pink flowers, illustrating how to grow closer to God through daily prayer and Bible reading.

1. Start Your Day Talking to God

Before you reach for your phone, check your messages, or start thinking about everything on your to-do list, take a moment to talk to God.

It doesn't have to be a long prayer.

Sometimes it's simply saying, "Heavenly Father, thank You for another day. Help me walk with You today."

What a difference it can make when we invite Him into our day before everything else starts competing for our attention.

2. Spend Time in God's Word

One of the best ways to grow closer to God is by spending time reading His Word.

And you don't have to read five chapters every morning!

Start with a few verses. Read them slowly. Think about what God might be teaching you.

Sometimes one Scripture is exactly what our hearts need.

Psalm 119:105 says:

"Your word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path."

God's Word helps guide us, encourage us, and remind us of His promises.

3. Make Prayer a Conversation

Prayer isn't supposed to be complicated.

You don't need fancy words or a perfectly worded prayer.

Just talk to God.

Tell Him what's on your heart. Share your worries, your hopes, your struggles, and the things you're thankful for.

And don't forget to spend a little time listening, too.

Prayer isn't just about asking God for things. It's about building a relationship with Him.

4. Learn to Be Still

This one can be hard, especially when life is busy!

We're so used to having something going on all the time that sitting quietly can feel uncomfortable.

But sometimes we need to turn off the noise and simply spend time in God's presence.

Psalm 46:10 reminds us:

"Be still, and know that I am God."

Even five quiet minutes can help us slow down, refocus, and remember that God is right there with us.

5. Keep a Prayer Journal

I love the idea of writing down our prayers, Scriptures, and the things God is teaching us.

A prayer journal gives us a place to slow down and really think about our relationship with Him.

It's also encouraging to look back and see how God has been faithful through different seasons of our lives.

You might write down:

  • A Scripture that spoke to your heart

  • Something you're praying about

  • Three things you're thankful for

  • A prayer God has answered

  • Something you feel God is teaching you

You don't have to write pages and pages. A few heartfelt sentences are enough.

6. Trust God Even When You Don't Understand

This may be one of the hardest parts of growing in our faith.

It's easy to trust God when everything is going the way we hoped.

But what about the waiting seasons? The unanswered prayers? The times when life just doesn't make sense?

Proverbs 3:5–6 reminds us to trust in the Lord with all our hearts and not lean on our own understanding.

We may not always understand what God is doing, but we can trust His heart.

Just because we can't see what God is doing doesn't mean He isn't working.

And sometimes those difficult seasons become the very places where our faith grows the strongest.

7. Make God Part of Your Everyday Life

Growing closer to God doesn't only happen during our morning devotion.

It happens throughout the day.

While you're driving, cooking dinner, folding laundry, taking a walk, or enjoying that afternoon cup of coffee.

You can thank Him, talk to Him, listen to worship music, or simply pause and remember His goodness.

The more we make room for God in the ordinary moments, the more we begin to recognize His presence in our lives.

Remember, It's About Relationship, Not Perfection

If there's one thing I hope you take away from this today, it's this:

You don't have to be perfect to grow closer to God. You just have to be willing to spend time with Him.

Start small.

Read a Scripture.

Say a prayer.

Spend a few quiet minutes with Him.

And tomorrow, do it again.

Little by little, those moments can make a beautiful difference in your relationship with God.

Let's Pray

Heavenly Father, thank You for loving us and inviting us into a closer relationship with You. Forgive us for the times we allow the busyness of life to take our attention away from You. Help us slow down, spend time in Your Word, and make prayer part of our everyday lives. Teach us to trust You even when we don't understand what You're doing. More than anything, Lord, help us grow closer to You each and every day. In Jesus' name, Amen.
